An Interesting Old Fashioned Hat/Head Doiley



I don't know for sure if the pattern is the same, but while cleaning out my grandmother's house after she died, I came across this little device:



This litte fan-shaped cloth is worn on the head by wrapping the string around one's hair tied in in a bun. The bun is left exposed out the back.


It is unlikely my grandmother would have worn one of these herself (she was only born in 1917) -- more likely it belonged to her mother or aunt, from whom she inherited many odd Edwardian clothing items and doo-dads. Obviously grandma's is less formal than the one shown in the illustration above. I'm not sure what sort of occasions these hats were worn for... can anyone shed some light?
