Anyone else recall the days when the computer put out by Apple was not a Mac, but a Macintosh? Well, in 1900, if you were going on about that subject, people might assume you meant this new skirt and cape ensemble that had come into vogue.
"The new cape and skirt style Mackintoshes are now recognized everywhere as a most practical and useful protection, and in severe storms will save a dress from ruin." The original Mackintoshes would have been rubberized garments, but the product descriptions for these ones indicate they were made from cashmere or wool. Also interesting to note: the capes were double-breasted, like a suit jacket!
Apparently both Macintosh and Mackintosh are acceptable spellings for these garments.
