My Lady's Boudoir: Treatment of the Hair (1905)
- Don't let the hair get heavy and oily.
- Don't let it get dry and brittle.
- Keep it free from dust.
- Learn how to make your hair shine.
- If it is light hair or brown hair treat it until you make it bloom.
- Don't burn off your hair with the tongs, but use hairpin curls. And don't try to put up a becoming coiffure unless you have at hand an artificial part or pompadour, or at least a twist for the back.
- If your hair is thin you can arrange it more becomingly than though it were heavy.
- But the woman with heavy hair need not despair. She can arrange it nicely if she tries. But she will do better to tie it lightly to her head and adjust a false coil or two. Otherwise she must go to endless trouble of waving and curling every day.
- Waves are pretty for the reason that the undulations of the hair are always softer and more becoming than straight hair. Don't let your hair hang in Indian fashion. Let it wave gracefully over your forehead. But if you happen to be one of the fortunate few to whom straight hair is becoming why just so much the better. Accept your straight hair and be thankful.
- The part is coming back, so they say. Well, it is not always becoming, but it is sure to look dignified and distinguished, and woman can be thankful for those two qualities.
