Invented in 1868, Hoyt's German Cologne is still available today. It was a common, fairly inexpensive perfume available in the days of the Gibson girls.
The fragrance is kind of a spicy, woody citrus -- and this recipe would show why.
1 ounce bergamot
1 ounce lemon oil
1/2 ounce neroli oil
1/2 ounce sandalwood oil
20 grains camphor oil
7 pints cologne spirit
1 pint rosewater
Combine and let sit for 1 month before use. Or you can buy your own official Hoyt's Cologne in the bottle.
Hoyt's was also available, during the Edwardian era, as a scented talcum powder.
