Lime and Glycerine Moisturizer

This mixture -- which might not necessarily contain lime juice OR glycerine -- could be used as a hair tonic, a skin moisturizer, or several other things. The Standard Formulary describes it as "a cosmetic lotion of indefinite character." This mixture is still used today, but here are some of the older variations:

I.
2 drams borax
26 oz sweet almond oil
2 drams castile soap
8 oz water
3 drams liquor potassa
perfume to suit

Dissolve the soap and the borax in the water over a water bath, place in a large bottle, and gradually add the oil, shaking well after every addition. Then add the liquor potassa, and shake well till cold. Lastly add the perfume and give an occasional shake for 12 hours.

II.
6 oz sweet almond oil
2 oz castor oil
4 oz lime water
2 oz glycerine

Mix well by agitation

III.
8 oz olive oil
8 oz lime water
2 drams lemon oil

IV.
8 oz lime juice
4 oz rosewater
2 oz alcohol
24 drops lemon oil
24 drops lavender oil
2 oz glycerine

Mix the lime juice and rosewater and add about half the alcohol. Shake well together, let stand 24 hours, strain, add the other ingredients, first dissolving the other oils in the alcohol.
