Maybe not every hat in 1914 was ugly; but having lately found a complete set of 1914's Vanity Fair Magazines I can say it was not one of the eras people like to remember in terms of capellaceous history for a reason. From time to time an okay piece of headwear would manifest amongst the pages, but altogether the fashion in this period was for toque-style hats or decorated boater hats, but decorated hideously with starched... things, sticking upwards, like little antennae or Shrek-ears or a candy bar wrapper that got lodged in it. I got so many examples of these hats, this is going to be a series of posts. Let the horror begin.
