In the Edwardian era, rouge was not only a cosmetic used to enhance the appearance of the lips and cheeks. Before the invention of modern nail polish, it was also rubbed into the center of the nails to give them a pink tint on the nail bed. Here are some recipes for all-purpose rouge from the book Beauty Culture at Home:
SALVE ROUGE (For the Cheeks, Lips and Nails).
Melt cocoa butter and a little sweet almond oil over warm water. Remove from the heat, whip hard and add enough powdered carmine to color desired shade. Pure and harmless.
SALVE ROUGE: (Cheeks, Lips and Nails).
Fresh hog's lard and powdered carmine mixed together until smooth, and then perfumed with a few drops of essence. Good for the nails.
